What Can I Do to Make My Bankruptcy Consultation Go Better?

I’m Steve Kramer of the Kramer Law Firm. The topic today is what can I do to make my bankruptcy consultation go better. If you’re going to file a bankruptcy, you want to have a good consultation with your attorney. You want to get good advice.

The first thing you need to do is write down any questions you have. That’s always a good idea. That way you’re prepared when you meet with an attorney. Sometimes some attorneys can be intimidating and sometimes you can forget what you wanted to ask and it’s a good idea to write everything down.

We try to be very inviting and open to everyone in our office to not be intimidating. But make sure you write everything down that way we can answer any of the questions. It’s always easier to have your questions answered when you have them all written down and you’ve got the attorney in front of you.

Two: make a chart that includes – or a list, a chart or list – that includes all of your assets and debts. We want to make sure we get a good picture of what your assets are and what your debts are. Because the ultimate goal is to make sure you come out from the bankruptcy in a better position then when you started and hopefully in a much better position. Also if there’s other alternatives to bankruptcy, we want to explore those. And by having a good snapshot of your assets and your debts we can do that.

The third thing that you can do to make your consultation better is make sure you know how much everybody in the house earns. The standard in court here – in the middle district of Florida – is heads in the bed. Alright. What is the income - including all of the income - in the entire house for everybody and that’s what we need to know. So if you can bring some pay stubs in, that’d be great. If you have tax returns, that’d be great too. Any documentation you can bring in but at least know what the household earns – that’s the important thing.

Why am I telling you this?

Because this is important information. You want to get the most out of your time. You want to get the most out of your attorney’s time. And you want to have a good experience and a good bankruptcy. And these are the steps that you have to take to do that.

So, if you have any questions call me. I’m here to help you. I deal with this stuff all the time.

Thanks for watching! I’m Steve Kramer.
